Hi Joe & Martina, can you tell us all a little bit about yourselves before becoming a country duo?
Joe comes from a farming family in the Central Valley of, CA, but music has always been the goal to achieve. He began playing in bands at the age of 13 and played the local bar scene by the age of 18. Before doing music full time Joe owned a cigar shop and worked on the family farm.
Martina was always involved with either horses or a pool. Music was a part of her life, but from the country music fan standpoint. Her journey began with singing karaoke at locals bars which then turned into a passion she never saw coming.
How did you form your duo and were there any other names you were going to call your duo?
Martina joined my band when we first started dating. We quickly realized that our journey was to take us out of CA and to Music City. We knew we wanted to brand ourselves as a duo and came up with the name “Terra Bella”. After 6yrs of being in Nashville, we found that the duo name was not a true representation of who we are. So what better duo name than the one’s our mamas gave us!
What made you decide to have careers in country music?
We really can’t see ourselves doing anything else. We have tried the whole “9-5’ work force, but our hearts always lead us back to country music,
What is the background story behind your new single “Brighter Than Neon?”
Martina and I were getting ready to head out to a writer’s night somewhere in Nashville and she walked into our living room to see what I thought about her outfit. She was wearing something that sparkled, so I said something along the lines of “Baby…You shine brighter than neon.” I knew when that came out of my mouth I had a song title that needed to be written. Luckily I had a writing session scheduled with my buddies Ray Fulcher and Dustin Huff a day or so later.. I brought the title and a few verse ideas to the table and we finished that song in about 3 hours. I knew I wanted to record it the second we finished writing the chorus.
What is your recording process like when creating and making new music?
Our workflow is kind of unique. I (Joe) am also a producer and produce a number of other acts such as Dustin Huff, Allie Colleen, Taylor Ray Holbrook and more, so it’s only natural that I produce Joe & Martina music. On our most recent work I’ve been teaming up with my longtime production partner (and former J&M band member) Ben Watts. The process starts with Martina and I listening to demos of songs we’ve written the last few months (sometimes we even go back to songs we wrote YEARS ago.) Once we find a few we feel strongly about we’ll typically record a quick guitar vocal and send it to Ben to get an outside unbiased ear on it Most the time he agrees with us and I start the tracking process. I typically start with building up a pre production demo track where I’ll play drums, guitars, bass etc. After we’re all pretty happy with that we send it to my session player buddies and have them replay or replace the parts I laid down in the pre production demo… after we’re happy with the arrangement we record vocals, mix and master it!!
