1. Hello Kayla, can you tell me a little bit about yourself before you became a country musician?
Hi Dixie Dee, thanks for the chat! Before I was a country musician I loved to play sports and obviously sing. I swam and played soccer for most of my life and balanced sports practice and competitions with singing in choir concerts and National Anthems. I loved being active in more than one thing throughout my school years and staying busy!
2. When did you become a fan of country music and when did you know you wanted a career in it?
I’ve been a country music fan as long as I can remember. I grew up listening to George Strait, Garth Brooks and Alan Jackson and fell in love with the genre. I always wanted a career in music but I didn’t think that it was actually a possibility until my sophomore year when I got some recognition from a National Anthem I sang. After that, I really focused on bettering my voice and working towards my dream of becoming a country music singer/songwriter.
3. Who are some of your musical icons?
Oh man, there are so many to choose from. Faith Hill and Carrie Underwood are high on my list of icons. I have looked up to them and wanted to be them since I was really little. They are just such amazing singers and performers, but they also are such great people too. Garth Brooks, George Strait and Alan Jackson are also icons for me, they’re legends! Like I said before I grew up listening to them, and there is something about older country that will always make my heart happy.
4. What is the background story behind your newest single “Never Really Know Somebody?”
I am so glad that you asked this because I love sharing this story. I had this idea about how there are some people in your life that you used to know so well but something happened and all you have is the memories. So I brought that to the table and from there the song transformed into what it is now. It truly is the most incredible thing to watch an idea turn into something much bigger. I also love Never Really Know Somebody because it can be relevant to any relationship. Whether it is a romantic relationship or a friendship or even your relationship with a family member, it can be applied to any situation.
5. Where do you see your music career in the next 5 to 10 years?
In the next 5 to 10 years I would love to have more music out and be traveling and sharing my music with others. Singing and performing are things that I love to do, but I also want to be able to connect with the people while sharing my music. I hope what I have to give is something that makes people’s lives better.
6. Is there anything new coming up with your music in 2019?
Yes! My EP Reckless and Brave will be coming out. I am so excited I can hardly wait! I also will be starting to tour and getting to share my music!
7. If you could sing a duet with another singer or group who would it be and why?
Garth Brooks without a doubt. For one, he is the greatest performer I have ever seen. When he came to Denver in 2015 I was blown away. The way he interacts with the crowd is so impressive, but also just his raw talent alone is unreal. Also, my favorite song ever is “If Tomorrow Never Comes” and if I got to duet that with him I would be the happiest person on the entire planet.
8. What is one of your favorite quotes?
My favorite quote is “I feel small, but so are stars from a distance”. I actually have it written out on my wall in my bedroom. It helps remind me that even when I feel like I’m small, that I can become something bigger than I am now if I work hard and continue to dream.
9. Is there anything else you would like to share?
Thanks so much for including me on your blog! I’m so excited to be a part of it!
I adore Kayla and had her as a student in middle school. Inside and out, she is a star up close. Best wishes, Kayla. 💙
