Maybe April: Q&A!!!

1.     Hi Kristen, Katy & Alaina, can you girls tell me a little bit about yourself before you formed country music group “Maybe April”?

Katy: I grew up in Arkansas doing dance and musical theater. When I got a little bit older I started writing songs and coming back and forth to Nashville in high school to pursue my career as a solo artist before I met Kristen and Alaina.

Kristen: I busy being a metal head. I started playing guitar when I was 10 and I used to hop around on stage and head bang. Now I’m in a Country Americana group. Life is weird.

Alaina: I think I was singing before I could talk. My parents used to be in band together, my older brothers were as well, and my little brother is a hip hop dancer. I guess it’s in our blood! I did a lot of musical theater and regular theater, but I always wanted to be a songwriter so I moved here as soon as I graduated high school.

2.     How did you girls form your group and how did you come up with your group name “Maybe April?”

We formed as a trio five and a half years ago (wow time flies) at Grammy camp in Nashville at Black River. It was the very first year they had the Camp in Nashville! We were all from separate parts of the country: Arkansas, Chicago, and Simi Valley California and we didn’t have anyone else to pair up with for the end of the week project so we just started writing a song together and ended up writing a song called Loving you Still.  We performed it at the end of the camp show and everybody there gave us really great feedback on it. The band name just came from the fact that Katy and Alaina were born in April and we liked the name playing on May and April. Kristen was born December so we say she’s the maybe haha.

3.     Who are some of your musical icons?

Our Maybe April sound pulls from a lot of our individual influences, which is kind of all over the map. Together it creates a an acoustic, country, Americana sound. Some of our favorite artists are the Civil War’s kas(who unfortunately aren’t together anymore), Kacey Musgraves, Brothers Osborne, Sarah Jarosz, Charlie Worsham, and Keith Urban.

4.     What is the background story behind your single “Last Time?”

Alaina was in an off and on relationship all throughout high school (and beyond), and one time she came back to Nashville after seeing him back home in Chicago and was just done. She knew she couldn’t keep going back and forth and had to be strong, so this song was just about telling yourself “I can’t keep doing this. This is the last time.” She played it for him next time she was home and the reaction was interesting…

5.     Is there anything else coming up with your music for 2018?

Yes! This spring we are really focusing on writing and recording some new material, then this summer we will be touring a lot!

6.     Where do you girls see your group in the next 5 to 10 years?

We’d like to be professional touring artists all over the world, playing bigger shows hopefully on a great tour with someone (*cough*KEITHURBAN*cough*) and hopefully have a few #1s too 😉

7.     If you girls could sing a duet with famous singer or group who would it be and why?

We’d love to sing a duet with Dolly. She’s such an icon and we admire her so much. We’d probably cry though.

8.     What are a few of your favorite quotes?

“Age is something that doesn’t matter, unless you are a cheese” – Luis Bunuel

“If you accept the expectations of others, especially the negative ones, then you will never change the outcome” – Michael Jordan

“Don’t be eye candy, be soul food”

9.     Is there anything else you girls would like to share?

We’d love to see everyone out at a show sometime! We’ll be traveling quite a bit this summer, so check out our tour schedule online and hopefully we’ll get to meet you!
