Q & A:

  1. Hi Kelli, can you tell me a little bit about yourself before you became a radio DJ?

Before I got started in radio I was a college kid going to school at University of La Verne. I worked part time as a server and spent the majority of my time hanging out with my friends. I’m born and raised in Rancho Cucamonga, California so I went to school local to be close to my family and friends.

  1. What led you to a career in radio?

My career in radio was pretty much a fluke. I was going to school for a degree in TV Broadcasting, but in order to finish all the criteria I also had to take some radio classes. One of my radio professors told me that he thought I would be perfect for a radio promotions job. He told me K-Frog was hiring and that I should apply. I applied and got the job. He was right, I loved it. So after I graduated college I got promoted and I became the Promotions Coordinator for K-Frog. My office happened to be next to K-Frog’s Program Director. One day he pulled me into his office and asked if I’d like to do some voice work. I started off doing liners, and then voice tracking our evening show, and then even filled in as a traffic reporter when needed. When our morning show producer took another job I was officer the position to join our morning show and without hesitation I jumped on it. That was almost 7 years ago.

  1. What is your favorite part of your job?

I love that my job is fun. I get to come in and talk about things going on in the world. My job is never boring. There’s always something trending or happening to talk about. Plus I get to go to concerts and talk to celebrities about their lives. There is definitely worst ways to make a living. I’m very fortunate.

  1. Who would be a “dream guest” to have on your show?

I’d love to talk to Jennifer Lawrence or P!nk. I think those are some women I could get along with. Since we’re making up dream scenarios, I’d also love to interview them at a bar with a drink. That would be awesome!

  1. What was your favorite radio station to listen to when you were growing up?

I actually listened to K-Frog growing up, which is a total trip. It’s really cool to work for a station that’s such a staple in the Inland Empire. I remember listening to my co-host, Scott, when he was starting with the station.

  1. Do you have a favorite hobby outside of radio?

Most of my free time is spent with my family. I have a 2-year-old son and I can’t get enough of him. Our family goes to river, sporting events (Dodgers and Kings), and also I love to hangout at home with our puppy.

  1. What kind of advice would you give people who would want to be a radio DJ?

Contact your local station. Set up a tour and meet as many people as you can. Just like any industry, it definitely helps to know people. Also, do what you can to get your foot in the door. Take promotion positions or work as a board op. Let that be your stage to shine and prove that you deserve to be a bigger part of the station.

  1. What did you want to be when growing up?

When I was in high school I wanted to be a professional party planner. I always enjoyed going to parties and decorating, so I thought that we be so much fun. That’s probably part of the reason I loved working in promotions. However, I’m glad I am where I’m at. Parties are fun, but radio is a blast.

  1. What is one of your favorite quotes?

I don’t think I have a favorite quote. However I do like the saying, “Everything happens for a reason.” I truly believe, that even if it doesn’t make sense at the time it’s being done for a reason you’ll learn about later.
