Morgan Leigh Q & A
- Can you tell me a little bit of your background before you became a musician?
Growing up, I always loved being on stage. Whether I was dancing, acting, musical theater, a talent show, just being on stage was my passion from a very young age. I grew up in a wonderful musical theater community and then began pursing a career in modeling at 12 years old. After a few years I grew interest in music and starting pursuing a career in country.
- How did you get into the music business?
When I was 15, I competed in an international performing arts competition called IPOP in Las Vegas. It was extremely successful for me and caught the attention of Capitol Records. I started working with Jamie O’Neal as my mentor and began writing and recording at 17 years old. This is when I met my songwriting partner, Paul Coughlin. We started our first band off of craigslist that summer and played our first full band show at the San Diego County Fair. Since then, we have had the pleasure to share the stage with Pat Benetar, James Otto, Raelynn, Sammy Kershaw, Craig Wayne Boyd, Jamie O’Neal, Chris Young, and Garth Brooks.
- Who are some of your music idols?
I grew up listening to Shania Twain, Dixie Chicks, and Miranda Lambert. They always have and always will be my music idols! I love seeing a strong female fronted group kick ass!
- If you could do a duet with a singer or band whom would it be and why?
100% Tim McGraw. That would be a dream come true! He was another artist I would always listen to growing up. My dad would always have country on in the car, on the boat, in the office. Tim McGraw has such a smooth and controlled voice; I would be honored to one-day share the stage with him!
- What are some of your favorite songs to perform live at a show or concert?
I love performing our original songs at shows! It is extremely vulnerable to share something so special with a group of strangers, but I get such a natural high from it! I love getting nervous before shows because it reminds me how much I love doing it! I wouldn’t get nervous if it didn’t mean so much to me! My favorite original to perform live is “Trouble”. I wrote it about a terrible ex boyfriend who was nothing but trouble. It’s my own way of saying F you in a nice way! Ha
- If you were not a singer, what would you be doing?
I would be a dance teacher or dolphin trainer. Something about dolphins just makes me so happy!
- Where do you see yourself in the next 5 to 10 years in your music career?
I see myself out on the road opening for Jason Aldean or Blake Shelton. Traveling the world and sharing our music one city at a time!
8. What are you most proud of your music career so far and why?
Paul and I started a kickstarter campaign a few years back. It was fully backed by our family and friends so we were able to record our first full-length album! It was the best feeling knowing we did it without a label.
- When you are not busy with your music what do you do in your free time?
I love spending time with my family. I’m very lucky to have such a large and supportive family so any time I can get with them I’ll take! Plus if it can be outside doing something active, it’s even better!
- What was it like to sing at Del Mar Racetrack?
Awesome venue and place for family and friends to come see us! Love San Diego!
- If you could give advice to an up and coming singer what would you tell them?
Never give up. There will be many people who tell you aren’t good enough or they don’t like you and that’s totally fine. But never give up; those who persevere and work hard will always reap the benefits!
